What is a Database?
Before understanding databases, let’s talk about data.
What is Data?
Data is the new fuel of the modern world.
In today’s time, data is everything.
Look at the richest companies—Amazon, Facebook, Google—why are they so powerful? Because they have massive amounts of data.
These companies provide us with free services—social media, search engines, online shopping—but in return, they collect our data:
- What we like
- What we search for
- Where we go
- What we buy
And this data is worth billions. They use it to show us ads, recommend products, and even predict our behavior.
The Three Big Phases for data:
- When Computers Were Invented – We started storing data digitally.
- When the Internet Came – Data started flowing globally, faster than ever.
- When AI Comes – Now, AI runs on data. The more data it has, the smarter it gets.
So What is a Database?
With so much data being created, we need a system that can:
- Store data safely
- Organize it properly
- Access it quickly
- Update it when needed
That’s exactly what a Database does.
